Year 5
You can be sure of a warm welcome in Year 5 and our classroom is a cheerful, friendly environment all year round! As it says on our door - we are 'Busy bees' in Year 5!
Our class teacher is Mrs Smalley and Mrs Larthwell is our HLTA (Higher Level Teaching Assistant). They both help us to be the best we can be and to aim high!
Reading is extremely important, and we enjoy whole class shared and guided reading, with texts linked to our projects, including a class story for each term. We use the VIPERS approach which really helps us to develop vital skills in vocabulary, inference, prediction, explanation, retrieval and summarising. Every day there is the chance to delve into an excellent book from our ever expanding class library! We also regularly access the school library for a wider range of non-fiction texts. There is a strong focus on developing our use of vocabulary in Y5, both spoken and written; we build up word banks of technical and subject specific language which we are then proud to use independently to express our learning. In addition, everyone loves Maths lessons where we continue to extend our formal and informal strategies for calculations alongside our reasoning and problem-solving skills. Just like the rest of our school, we follow the White Rose Maths scheme. We learn through teacher-led whole class and small group teaching, video tutorials, visual representations and by using manipulative and conduct practical investigations to help us grasp new concepts securely.
As well as daily Maths, English and project lessons (which encompass, History, Geography, Art, Design Technology, Computing), we also enjoy Music, PE, RE, PSHE (including Mindfulness), and French. Our weekly Science lessons are great as we get to work scientifically by using practical investigations to test our theories! In Y5 our PE curriculum includes Hockey, Athletics, Games, Dance and Gymnastics. We love to get outside for PE and make the most of our beautiful surroundings!
Through the Cornerstones projects, we study a range of subjects through exciting projects which enable us to be creative in our writing, art and presentation, as well as building up skills, knowledge and understanding. There is so much to discover, question and appreciate about the world!
The teachers in Y5 are always there to support us, and we try not to be afraid of challenges but to look for the positives. We have a 'calm corner' to take a moment. In the classroom itself, we use our learning walls and the e-board to help us to with our learning.
