Year 5

You can be sure of a warm welcome in Y5 and our classroom is a sunny and bright place to be all year round!  Through the Cornerstones Curriculum, we study a range of subjects through exciting projects which enable us to be creative in our writing, art and presentation, as well as building up knowledge and understanding.  There is so much to discover, question and appreciate about the world!

Reading is extremely important and we enjoy whole class shared and guided reading, with texts linked to our projects, including a class story for each term.  Everyday there is the chance to delve into a really good book from our ever expanding class library!  We also regularly access the school library for a wider range of non-fiction texts. There is a strong focus on developing our use of vocabulary in Y5, both spoken and written; we build up word banks of technical and subject specific language which we are then proud to use independently to express our learning.  In addition, everyone loves Maths lessons where we continue to extend our formal and informal strategies for calculations alongside our reasoning and problem solving skills.  Just like the rest of our school, we follow the White Rose Maths scheme.   We learn through teacher-led whole class and small group teaching,  video tutorials, visual representations and by using manipulatives; we can practise in our maths jotters and conduct practical investigations to help us grasp new concepts securely.

As well as daily Maths, Literacy and project lessons (which encompass Science, History, Geography, Art, Design Technology, Music, Computing), we also enjoy PE, RE, PSHE (including Mindfulness),  and French.  In Y5 our PE curriculum includes Hockey, Athletics, Games, Dance and Gymnastics.  We love to get outside for PE and make the most of our beautiful surroundings!

The teachers in Y5 are always there to support us, and we try not to be afraid of challenges but to look for the positives.  We have a 'calm corner' to take a moment when things get too much and  an area for small group work with an adult. In the classroom itself, we like having our desks all facing forwards as this helps us to focus on our learning and see the e-board clearly!

Our teacher is Mrs Osborne and we are taught by Mrs Crouch on Mondays. We are also lucky to have Mrs Anderson and Miss Rossiter  to guide and encourage us.  All our teachers help us to be the best we can be and to aim high!
