Year 1

The Year 1 Team

Welcome to the Year 1 page! Our class teacher is Miss Morley and Mrs Malbon is our HLTA (Higher Level Teaching Assistant). We also have Miss Whitham and Mrs Lowe join us throughout the week. They are always there to ensure we are safe and happy at school. 

In Year 1, learning and play go hand-in-hand as the continuous provision from Reception weaves into our Key Stage 1 Curriculum ensuring a smooth transition. Our curriculum is practical and interactive with lots of opportunities for independent learning and discovery. 

Projects

We use Cornerstones projects to follow the National Curriculum for Science and the foundation subjects. In Year 1 our projects include:

Autumn Term: Childhood

Spring Term: Bright Lights, Big City

Summer Term: School Days

During our projects we have a ‘memorable experience’ which engages and inspires us to find out more. We develop our understanding of our project by engaging in cross-curricular activities which include Science, History, Art, Geography and Design & Technology. This keeps every lesson exciting and provides lots of different opportunities in which to learn. Towards the end of our project, we have the chance to 'express' how much we have learnt over the past few weeks through completing specific creative activities. These help us to retain the information we have learnt throughout our project.

Key vocabulary is taught throughout and referred to regularly during each Project.

We also have weekly lessons in PE, Religious Education (RE), Music and Personal Social Health Education (PSHE).
